There is so much more to learning and development in organisations than formal training.

A fast-changing world, growth and routine new joiners all make effective learning and development vital to maximising performance. Whilst formal training has its place, the 'forgetting curve' tells us that with any new learning it is a case of 'use it or lose it'.

Today you can neither afford to waste time nor money on training that is not working. Blending formal training, early use, coaching support and new technologies helps you to have a higher performing organisation faster, often at lower overall cost. Interestingly learning on the job with proper coaching support can be highly effective too.

The name Lean 6 (or Six) Sigma may or may not turn you on! Nevertheless it can represent a structured approach to continual improvement. It has widespread recognition as a way to help your organisation make it part of daily work. That recognition includes the possibility for staff to obtain qualifications.

There is a caveat. Beware snake oil merchants who really do not understand the subject. As a Chartered Quality Professional I do. What is more my knowledge and experience of helping people learn makes the experience more effective and more fun!

The saying that if you fail to plan you plan to fail is so true. However large or small an activity that you intend to undertake planning helps, as it says else where on this site, to get you better quality outcomes faster and at a lower cost.

There are different methods that are suitable for projects of every size and it pays to make a careful choice. For example, planning methods for building a chemical process plant would not be suitable for altering your home.

Within reason the more time you take in planning the better the outcome. However, it is important to understand that plans do not withstand contact with reality. It is a trade off as normally some timely correction is needed to keep a project on course even when the risks have been assessed.
